The Division of Instructional and Technology Support Services (DoIT) assists the University in using technology to support excellence in learning and teaching. To this end, DoIT works collaboratively with individual faculty, staff, and students, with academic and administrative departments and support units on campus, and with organizations and institutions outside the University to initiate and sustain projects related to its mission.

DoIT programs encompass these five dimensions:

Information Resources: DoIT serves as a source of information regarding technology resources at George Mason, as well as information on instructional improvement, instructional design, instructional technology, pedagogy, learning assessment, curricular development, and learning research. DoIT also serves as a clearinghouse of information on campus instructional and technology support services.

Learning Opportunities: DoIT coordinates technology training on campus for students, faculty and staff and provides instructional materials, workshops, training sessions, mentoring, skills certification, advanced learning experiences, and follow-up support for users of technology applications. In addition, DoIT provides learning opportunities for the campus community on a wide variety of issues related to instruction and the effective use of technology.

Instructional Environment: DoIT assists with the planning, design, implementation, maintenance, support and use of technology-related instructional facilities such as computing labs, electronic classrooms and distance learning centers, multimedia presentation facilities, broadcast facilities, technology production and development facilities, and academic buildings incorporating technology. DoIT also supports the telecommunication infrastructure and desktop computers and servers needed to provide access to technology resources for students, faculty, and staff of the University.

Client Support: DoIT supports individual users through telephone assistance and field visits to install, repair, and maintain telecommunications and computer equipment and software applications. DoIT also assists in the design, development, implementation and assessment of instructional modules, courses, and programs of study, particularly those incorporating student technology skills.

Advocacy: DoIT promotes the importance of learning and teaching and serves as an advocate for and partner with individuals and groups within the University and outside it working on learning/teaching initiatives and research. In order to assess needs and understand trends in using technology, DoIT maintains regular communication with students, faculty, and staff and solicits their feedback and evaluation.
