SUPPORT OF STATISTICAL SOFTWARE (SAS AND SPSS) AND
PROVISION OF RELATED RESEARCH SERVICES
Since 1999, the Information Technology Unit has provided enhanced centralized support services to the George Mason University academic community through a tiered service model. This redefinition of services was designed to facilitate and strengthen the continuing support by academic units of research needs of faculty and students. The support services of each of the IT units are as follows:
ITU Support Center
Whom do I contact if I have a problem running a program?
The ITU Support Center is the point of initial contact. Staff can resolve PC problems such as those involving memory and file space. However, when unable to solve a problem, staff members will forward the faculty or staff member’s question to the appropriate person and track its resolution. (Support Center does not have resources to troubleshoot personal computer problems for students and may refer student to Patriot Computers or other vendor for assistance.)
Whom do I contact if I need SPSS or SAS software installed on my PC?
If you are a faculty or staff member and wish to have a technician install the software on a Mason-owned computer, contact the ITU Support Center (x38870). (Students install their own purchased copy.)
Can faculty and staff use a copy of SPSS or SAS at home?
No. George Mason University’s site license does not allow for SPSS or SAS to be installed on a privately-owned computer. These programs can only be installed on Mason-owned computers.
DoIT
What statistical software support is available in DoIT Academic Labs, Electronic Classrooms, Instructional Resource Center (IRC), and the Student Technology Assistance and Resource (STAR) Center?
DoIT (Academic) Labs and Electronic Classrooms - SPSS and Minitab are available in all DoIT Labs and Electronic Classrooms. SAS is only available in the Johnson Center Labs. DoIT support staff will make every effort to assist lab users with:
Loading data onto PCs from floppy disks, CD-ROMS, and the Internet
Resolving system error messages
Provide file space for faculty data sets on the George Mason University shared network drive.
IRC and STAR – No support is provided.
University Libraries
Where do I get more advanced support?
Students and faculty requiring assistance beyond that described above should contact Howard Lasus, Ph.D., Research Consultant in Fenwick Library. The University Libraries will provide:
Directions to tutorials on the Internet.
Computer Based Training at different levels of expertise for software such as SPSS and Intermediate SPSS. If there are not enough people for a class “one on one” sessions or other training will be provided.
Computing facilities running common and less common statistical programs such as SUDAAN, SPSS, SAS, Remark (for creating questionnaires and reading and tallying marks on questionnaires with a scanner) SPSS Missing Value Analysis, SPSS Power Analysis, and STATA Stat Transfer.
The Research Consultant is available for the statistical research instruction and research assistance.
Qualitative analysis support is available for NVivo and research design.
